What causes your drain to block?
1) Roots
One of the most common causes of drains to block are underground roots. Root invasion occurs when tree and plant roots infiltrate your sewage system, growing right through plumbing pipes or wrapping around and crushing them, in search of the water that flows inside.
This also happens over time and could speed up if your pipes are in poor condition, with cracks or holes that allow the roots to enter the drain.
2) Non-flushable products
Tissues, paper towels, and single-use wipes, including cleansing and diaper wipes, cannot be safely flushed, even if they are labeled as “flushable” or “biodegradable.” Other non-flushable items include things like diapers, feminine hygiene products, disposable gloves, cotton swabs, dental floss, and kitty litter.
Flushing or dumping the wrong things down the drain can cause blockages in your own home as well as problems in the local sewer system. These products do not break down like toilet paper and can clog systems very quickly. Many sewer blockages occur between your house and the sewer main.
3) Collapsed drain pipe
Drain pipes can over time collapse due to age or external factors such as underground roots. There are a few signs that will indicate whether your drain has collapsed and they are - Frequent Blockages - More than one appliance blocking up - Your lawn is constantly soaked and your grass grows like crazy. If a drain pipe is collapsed this needs to be rectified as soon as possible as this will cause all your sewage to push back up into your home.
4) Non-maintenance of drain pipes
As a good preventive measure you should have your sewer / drain lines cleaned every 18-22 months. If you are experiencing problems more often than that, you may need to schedule a video inspection of your pipes to determine any underlying problems.
Early signs that your drain is starting to block up:
1. Slow Draining Water: If you notice water taking longer than usual to drain from sinks, showers, or tubs, it may indicate an impending blockage.
2. Unpleasant Odors: Foul smells emanating from drains can be a sign of trapped debris, indicating a potential blockage.
3. Gurgling Sounds: Strange gurgling or bubbling sounds when water is draining could suggest a blockage in the pipes.
4. Water Backing Up: Water backing up in sinks, toilets, or showers is a clear indication of a blockage in the drainage system.
