Why you need to consider water storage
Water is the most important resource on earth. Without water no life on earth will be possible. 97% of the earth’s water is saline (salt water). The remaining 3% is fresh water. The fresh water is then split up. 69% of the remaining 3% of fresh water is trapped in the polar icecaps (2.07% of total earth’s water resources). The remaining 30,7% of the fresh water (0,9% of total earth’s water resources) is ground water. The remaining 0,3% surface water is split into 87% dams, 11% wetlands and 2% rivers. The total supply of fresh water is in the region of 1350 trillion litres. This gives you a good indication of the scarcity of fresh drinkable water and why we must do our utmost best to preserve this valuable resource.
One way of doing your part is to install a water storage system. There are several benefits in installing such a system, saving money is only one of them, let’s look at a few examples:
Municipal backup
This system is ideal for when the municipal water supply is off. The storage tank is connected with the main water supply and filled with potable water, the tank then in turn provides the home with this stored water. In the case when the water supply is off your home will not be affected, you can use this stored water until the water supply from the municipality comes back on. Not only this but having a water storage tank on your premises takes off the load from the municipal supply during peak hours.
Rainwater harvesting
This systems accumulates the rainwater from your roof into a storage tank. This system does need to be installed with a filtration system as well. This system provides you self sufficiency as you will have an additional source of water which is free from nature itself. This water can be used to water your garden and plants. Theoretically one should be able to catch 1 litre of rainwater per square metre of catchment area per millimetre of rain fallen. This means that the bigger your roof the more rainwater you would be able to catch into your water storage tank. This might not sound like alot but believe me it makes a huge difference when you start making the sums. The average rainfall in Gauteng per annum is 700mm. This can make a huge saving in your water bill. Let’s take a conservative 60m2 of catchment area x 700mm of rainfall per year = 42000 litres of water per year.
You can have intergrated systems
This system serves as both a municipal backup and a rainwater harvesting system. The tank is filled halfway with potable municipal water and is then topped up with captured rainwater. This water is filtered and sterilized to provide your home with clean potable water…
Other benefits include:
Reduced chances of water hammering in your plumbing system
Reduced water pressure will reduce the chance of leakage in your plumbing system
Constant low pressure reduces the water consumption
